Adjustments While Pregnant – Webster Technique

Once I become pregnant, can I still get adjusted?
Is chiropractic safe for pregnancy?
How can I lay face down on the table when I am 8 months pregnant?

These are just a few questions chiropractors get when it comes to treating the pregnant population. Whether you are 4 weeks pregnant or 40 weeks pregnant, chiropractic is absolutely safe in almost all cases. In fact, there is a special technique, known as the Webster Technique. Webster Technique is a specific chiropractic analysis and adjustment that reduces nerve stress, balances pelvic bones, muscles and ligaments, and optimizes the mother’s pelvic function in pregnancy and birth.

The main areas this technique focuses on are the pelvis and sacrum, or tailbone area.. With the pelvis being balanced and creating an optimal environment for the baby, there is a reduction in tension within the muscle and ligaments in the area, which come under tension due to constant bodily changes that pregnant women experience. This not only creates a comfortable environment for the baby to develop, it also aids in making the birth process easier, shorter and less traumatic for both mother and baby.

This involves the patient to be laying face down on the table, which clearly poses an issue for the growing belly. Luckily for this population, most chiropractors who practice Webster Technique also have tables and tools to accommodate a developing pregnancy. The two main tools chiropractors use is a table with a “drop away” piece or using pregnancy pillows. These comfortable Tempur-Pedic pillows have a big cutout in the middle to accommodate the pregnant belly, and allow mom to lay comfortably on her stomach. Most of the technique is done face down, so the chiropractic table will also have “drop pieces,” that deliver safe and gentle adjustments to the pelvic bones to create optimal alignment.

An aligned spine means a happy nervous system, a happy nervous system means a happy body and a happy body means a happy and safe environment for a baby. Whether it is your first pregnancy or tenth, make this experience as easily and enjoyable as possible.
