The #1 Mistake Most People Make When It Comes To Getting Healthier
When I review food journals, I always include these 3 critical questions:
-
How much water do you drink on a daily basis?
-
Do you rely on stimulants to get you through the day and if so what kind and how much?
-
Any other liquids that you consume on a regular basis such as juice, alcohol or soda of any kind?
I want to tell you a story about a woman that I helped recently. On her intake form, the primary reasons she was seeking help with her nutrition was consistent brain fog, lack of energy, poor sleep and chronic low back pain. As a successful executive in the financial services industry, the symptom that was crippling her the most was the brain fog. She was stuck in a recurring cycle of relying on coffee to get her through the day due to fatigue, and having trouble sleeping at night because she could not shut down. I could tell just by looking her that adrenal fatique was already present just from the dark circles under her eyes [even make up could not cover up]. She also admitted to dozing off on occasion in stop-and-go traffic on her way home from work.
I felt so bad at the end of the consult, because immediately I knew that her primary issue – She was chronically DEHYDRATED!
In fact, I almost felt guilty taking her money as she had paid me for an hour of my time all to tell her that YOU NEED TO DRINK MORE WATER and LESS COFFEE. In the end I showed her how to increase her water in a strategic manner, recommended eliminating gluten from her diet due to its highly inflammatory effects, and put her on a specific brand of high dose of fish oil to nourish her cells and nervous system.
A month later she came back to check in with me. She reported that she had cut the coffee in half, followed my recommendations on the water intake, eliminated gluten, and was consistent with the fish oil AND IT CHANGED HER LIFE.
Not only was she feeling so much better, but her brain fog had lifted, and she was feeling more energy than ever before! This allowed her to be fully present at work to lead her team of employees to one of her most productive months yet in her business. In addition, between getting adjusted consistently, increasing the water intake and supplementing with fish oil her low back pain was now GONE. She also had forgot to mention that she also would consistently get Charlie horses in the middle of the night in her hamstrings that would wake her up writhing in pain. Guess what? Those were gone too.
I share this story not to impress you, but to impress upon you one thing and one thing only. SIMPLE changes lead to BIG differences over time. The goal is to find out what might be that one simple thing that you may be overlooking that might change your life.
If water intake is your one thing, my recommendations is to drink HALF your body weight in ounces on a DAILY basis. This means if you weigh 150Lbs you need to drink 75 ounces of water a day. In addition, if you workout or drink stimulants or alcohol of any kind you need to increase this amount even more. A LOT of pain, systemic inflammation, inability to focus, migraines and low back pain can be caused by dehydration. As an added bonus, not only does increasing your water intake help prevent all of these things it also boosts your metabolism as well.
