As the topic of infertility becomes more apparent across the world and social media platforms, we have to remember that this is not a new issue. The World Health Organization states that 1 in 4 couples in developed countries struggle with infertility. Infertility is defined by the inability to conceive after one year of actively trying to get pregnant, this also includes conceiving and giving birth to still borns, and/or miscarriages. As of 2020, 15% of married couples struggle with infertility, and it is almost equally due to both male and female reproductive dysfunctions. Whereas in the past, infertility was predominantly considered a female issue. There are assisted reproductive technologies (ART) for people struggling with infertility; IUI (Intrauterine Insemination) and most commonly, IVF (In Vitro Fertilization). Limitations with IVF include: (1) cost; the cost of IVF ranges from $5,000 to $10,000 USD, with the majority of those costs being out of pocket and (2) IVF on average takes two or more rounds to result in a successful pregnancy. Type 2 Diabetes and high blood sugar in men leads to alteration in sperm DNA and will create a lower sperm count.
