When I meet patients for the first time, I revisit the reasons why I became a chiropractor. I realize not everybody has exposure to preventing problems before they happen.
When I was a kid, I played a lot of sports and had many bumps and bruises. Luckily my mom had the wits to bring me to a chiropractor. I remember the X-rays and the doc talking to me about my issues, but as a teenager I was only half paying attention. However, I did get the message that she could help me with my issues.
For years I appreciated the adjustments and small nuggets of health education, but I really didn’t think much of it at the time. At one point she suggested I look into becoming a chiropractor too. But that really isn’t where my story began.
I wanted to be a firefighter.
So I joined the Fire Academy in Northern California where I was living. The first semester we took a health course and we were studying diabetes of all things. Ironically during that time, I was experiencing some really odd symptoms. But again, being young I thought little of it! I was a pretty healthy, young guy.
My symptoms were rapid weight loss, excessive thirst and blurred vision. It turned out to be a classic case for Type 1 Diabetes! After a week in the hospital, at 20 years old it was one tough pill to swallow to hear this diagnosis.
The good news is this is where my story changed. I looked and felt healthy, but I wasn’t healthy.
This is the reason why I am so passionate about getting up and helping people everyday.
I learned in the hospital, and then from my endocrinologist, that while I had a disease for which there was no cure, my lifestyle would ultimately determine my outcomes.
Who did I turn to for learning the wellness lifestyle? My chiropractor.
It was then that I made up my mind that the chiropractic lifestyle was what I needed to be a better person. I was going to help people and what I wanted to do for my career.
My first experience working in a clinic was at Athens Chiropractic in San Carlos, CA. Dr. Athens was the team chiropractor for the 49ers, SF Giants and the San Jose Sharks.
As an athlete, it was a dream internship. Along with doing new patient exams, I worked in the rehab department showing patients corrective and rehabilitative exercises.
After graduating and marrying the love of my life, Beth Greene (who is also a chiropractor), we moved out to New England where she grew up.
Much of my early practice was geared towards “patch care”. My patients would come in when they had pain, and leave when they felt better.
I like to call this the “expensive aspirin” form of chiropractic care.
I helped people feel better temporarily, but never dramatically changed their lives or their health, unlike the chiropractor that so heavily influenced my life did. I knew from my own journey with wellness that health was more than symptom chasing. It is about correcting the problems and not patching them.
This wellness approach that I live is always a work in progress, but it was what helped me navigate my health since my diagnosis.
30 years later I am a thriving, healthy guy and have not had one complication from Type 1 Diabetes.
